Implementing plastic-free packaging for a purpose-driven athletics brand
Hylo Athletics is a company on a mission to protect the future of running and sport
Reduce the carbon footprint of low-impact packaging even further
As a B Corp, Hylo is serious about sustainability. And to reflect this, they used a water-soluble plastic inner bag to ship their footwear, a step up from normal virgin plastic bags. But Hylo wanted to move away from plastic entirely and reduce their footprint even further. Here was the challenge: find a more sustainable alternative to a solution that already went beyond the norm.
Recyclable packaging that empowers customers to take climate action
Water-soluble bags are promising, but they’re far from perfect. Often, for example, they need hot water to break down, which adds to their footprint. And other times they don’t completely dissolve, leaving harmful microplastics behind. We focused here on disposal as a way for Hylo to achieve their vision, testing a run of options before developing a custom glassine paper bag in collaboration with the Hylo team.
This was the ideal match for Hylo, a plastic-free but durable alternative to normal polythene bags. And with a translucent finish to glassine bags, Hylo’s team could easily identify orders even after packing — a bonus for an e-Commerce brand. Finally, and most importantly, Hylo’s customers could recycle the packaging from home, with zero effort.
By switching to the glassine bag, Hylo reduced the carbon footprint of their inner packaging by 29%.
Hylo choose a plastic-free packaging solution
Hylo now ships its pioneering footwear in plastic-free inner bags. Combined with paper mailer bags for outer packaging, every part of their packaging is recyclable. Hylo also significantly reduced their carbon footprint and had the exact number to pass on to customers and other stakeholders alike.
